DESIGNATED MEMBERS
As the world’s leading organization of professional real estate appraisers, the Appraisal Institute has general appraisal members who hold the MAI, SRPA, or SREA designation, and residential members who hold the SRA or RM designation. Identified by their experience and knowledge of real estate valuation, these members adhere to a strictly enforced Code of Professional Ethics and Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice.
CANDIDATE FOR DESIGNATION
Individuals pursuing Appraisal Institute designated membership who hold a state certification or equivalent (as approved by the Admissions Designation and Qualifications Committee).
PRACTICING AFFILIATE
A Practicing Affiliate is an individual who provides service(s) as defined by the Code of Professional Ethics (CPE). Service(s) defined by the CPE include: appraisal, appraisal review, appraisal consulting, and real property consulting. Individuals who may qualify for this category could include, state certified, licensed, trainee, provisional, and register appraisers (or equivalent), or any individual who may provide service(s) as defined by the CPE.
AFFILIATE
An Affiliate is an individual who is interested in property economics but does NOT provide any service(s) as defined by the CPE. Service(s) as defined by the CPE include: appraisal, appraisal review, appraisal consulting, and real property consulting. Affiliates share in the interests and concerns of the appraisal profession but DO NOT provide service(s) as defined by the CPE. This category includes Bankers, Lawyers, Accountants, Consultants, Developers, Financial Planners, Government Officials, Investors, Real Estate Brokers, Real Estate Sales, Researchers, Vendors, or those interested in property economics but who do not provide service(s) as a valuer.
STUDENT AFFILIATE
A Student Affiliates are those enrolled in college or university programs related to real estate, finance and/or economics.

The MAI membership designation is held by professionals who provide a wide range of services on all types of real property related to providing opinions of value, evaluations, review, consulting and advice on investment decisions, among other things.
